I would like to travel throughout Egypt and see everything. I would like to begin my travels around the begininning of May. What would you say the proper amount of time and budget would be for a trip like this. Totallly a budget trip, mind you. Scotty
When you say EVERYTHING I assume you mean you would like to cover ALL the major tourist cites which is generally:
Cairo and Giza
and somewhere in Sinai like Dahab or Sharm.
Considering you are on a budget I assume you would be travelling fairly quickly so I would say 3 weeks would be long enough. Of course if money is no option you could take many many months to see Egypt.
May is a good time of the year to visit Egypt. If you are flying into Cairo airport, I suggest you find accommodation in the Giza area (that's West of downtown Cairo and has some reasonably priced places). Visit the pyramids, the Sfinx, and Sakkara (a bit further south). Ideally you should do this through a local travel agency, unless you converse in Arabic.
Arrange for a return train ticket to Aswan: that's an overnight and shaky railway trip. There are various reasonable accommodations here, and you should visit the dam and elefantine island. Return to Luxor, even though there are many interesting places in between and visit the Valley of the Kings. See if you can get a cheap passage on a Nile steamer from Aswan to Luxor instead of the train. That'll take you a few days though.
From Luxor return to Cairo (by train) unless you might want to see Abu Simbel first, for which you would have to take a return air ticket for the day.
In Cairo, you can't miss the Khan Al Khalili souk (market), nor the nearby Al-Azhar mosque. Once you get the hang of Cairo, which has over 17 million inhabitants, you could spend any time here. I would take a tour to Alexandria over the desert route and back over the delta road. This will give you a unique feel of the contrast between desert and cultivation.
Timing ? Probably 2 weeks if you can keep the pace. Cost: depends upon your travel methods (train, air, boat), otherwise count on US$ 30~40 per person a day for hostel and food.
Enjoy your time!
@Spoons: Are you from the USA ? Egypt will be cheap and you can make it as cheap as you want. It all depends on what you want to sea and do. Remember Egypt can be expensive if you sleep in hotels like the Hilton or Sheraton but can be cheap if you sleep in more normal hotels/hostels.
