I am doing a tourism assignment at school and am needing some overseas citizens views on this topic.

I figure that when people overseas think of Australia they automatically think Sydney, but what sorts of things do you associate with Australia?

Do you associate Australia with being a big country with a lot of desert/outback with lots of Kangaroos, hot weather, nice nature, aboriginals or what sort of thing?

I am doing a tourism assignment and this is one thing I need to try and get a proper answer to not just my ideas of what foreigners think, so I thought this would be a good place to start. So if you have any opinion please let me know.

Thanks for any opinions you can offer.

As I'm Austrian, we always have the problem that foreigners think of Australia.

example: an american exchange student told his friends where he was going to teach- Austria. They said 'Wow, Australia u get to see some kangaroos!' He answers 'No, not Australia, Austria! I get to see some cows!'
It happens all the time and you can even buy T-shirts that make fun of it.

But to ur question:

years ago when I didn't know much of Australia my answer would have been:

Uluru/Ayers Rock, Great Barrier Reef, Sydney+Opera House, Down Under/red sand/desert, trying to work out the real capital city which is also not Adelaide , Aborigines, cangaroos, wallabies, koala bears etc. (eucalyptus of course), lots of bush fires

these days I also think of (as I still haven't seen a lot from AUS): Gold Coast, Crocodile Hunter, Summer Olympics, Rugby/Cricket, Nicole Kidman, but especially all the places I wanna see in the future, especially since I lived in NZ for a few years and wanna find out myself, which country is the better one *g*

The first thing that comes to mind about Australia is aboriginis. Dijiridoos, Boomerangs and Rolf Harris.

Charlie Brown (Your Prime Minister) and Steve Irwin.

Animals with Pouches (Roos, Euros, Quokkas, Koalas and Wombats),

Also Aussie Rules Football / International Rules and sharks.

I haven't been to Aus yet and when I think of it the first thing that comes to mind is Men at Work's Down Under:

"Traveling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said,

Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Cant you hear, cant you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover.

Buying bread from a man in brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, do you speak-a my language?
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,

I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Cant you hear, cant you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover.

Lying in a den in bombay
With a slack jaw, and not much to say
I said to the man, are you trying to tempt me
Because I come from the land of plenty?
And he said,

Oh! do you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah)
Where women glow and men plunder?
Cant you hear, cant you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

After that, I'll think of the following: Walkabout, Sydney, kangaroos, coalas, beautiful beaches, fab parties!

Two things:

Kangaroos and how the people on the East Coast seem as if they could care less about the West Coast.
