I just started reading an interesting book on Sound in Films and I came upon an interesting question:

If you had to, what would you give up - Seeing or Hearing?

Oh, and a bit more obscure: Smell or touch?

I hope you knocked on wood before you posted that, Philly! I must refrain from answering - although I will say that smell is the sense most linked to memory and emotions. I wouldn't weant to live without it.

I would give up hearing and smell.
Seeing is travelling! Or the other way around of course.
And touch...well, that's personal;)

It's a hypthetical question, T... It's not like somebody will come knocking on your door asking you if they can have your eyes. Unless you sign one of them Organ Donor cards...

I couldn't do my job, without hearing, so my sight would have to go.

Don't say it like that! You're asking for trouble! Quick - go drink eye of newt and knock on a big birch tree!

I agree.

My hearing is slowly fading with age and increased tinnitus so I know I could live without it if need be. Sight would be much harder as I am a very visual person and would feel completely lost without it. (Yeah, I know - I'd be wandering around in circles for days.)

I could definitely get along without smell even with it being key to the sense of taste. With my allergies, I'm used to not tasting half the food I eat anyway. Touch, on the other hand, would be a great loss. So much of my world involves color and texture that losing sight and touch would devastate me for quite awhile.

A huge coincidence... this week there was a sports for the differently abled training programme session and one of the questions that the trainer asked participants was whether they thought seeing or hearing is more important and almost all participants answered sight. He then asked them to follow his instructions and do exactly as he said. He kept repeating 'touch your forehead' a couple of times and would touch his forehead and the fourth time, he said 'touch your chin' but he touched his forehead. All the people who could see touched their own foreheads. Only those who couldn't see touched their chin. His persepctive was that hearing is more important than sight.

Me, personally, I think I would prefer sight over sound as by seeing, you get to experience more than you would, if you relied on your hearing and someone else's narration, rather than visualizing it yourself. And, I would prefer touch over smell.

I think I would definately choose for sight. Because otherwise its no use travelling. I think you can do a lot more with your sight. I would even choose for sight if that means that I would lose smell and hearing. Touch you can't loose I think. It would be not so nice if I could not see beautiful landscapes, cities, women etc anymore. I have known a man who was blind since his 11th and at his 46th he lost his hearing as well. That must be so terrible, its like being a prisoner in your own body.

where did you get that one from phil ?????
yep knock on wood, eye of newt and all the rest.
but if the choise had to be made, me too, i would have to keep the old mince pies (eyes) and the touch..........the up side is you would not hear anyone break wind and know the sfter effects....sorry
