I knew about this place, but why is it more famous than other places in Iran?
I heard Mashad is a very important/sacred place as well?

It is a book.
Isfahan Is Half the World.
Memories of a Persian Boyhood by Sayyed Mohammed Ali Jamalzadeh.

Reader's review from Amazon.com -

"Isfahan is half the world" is not just a wonderful boyhood tale, it is an essential introduction in to the origins of the problems of modern Iran. Sayyed Mohammad Ali Jamalzadeh was one of the major modern Iranian writers, and his father was in the eye of the typhoon of the violent reformer vs. tradionalist and laicist vs. islamist debates in Iran at the beginning of the 20th century.

Esfahan is a nice city. It has a few beautiful mosques (with big turquase domes). There is a nice river where many people hang around, especially on friday. There are around 10 bridges build in different architecture. The teahouses in the city are also very good. Its a very pleasent city to wander around. I stayed 5 days in Esfahan and it was like entering heaven after the chaos and traffic in Tehran.

I did not know, about Esfahan, before I started reading abour Iran.
Now, I am very excited about going there.

But I think how much a person knows a city, depends on where they are from. We know cities like London, New York and Paris. People from Asia and the Middle East probably know different cities better.

Interesting. There is a difference between knowing the city or having heard of the city. I am sometimes surprised how many people have not even heard of certain cities, although they are very experienced travellers.
We could start a thread like 'know your capitals' but of course fraude will probably be there instantly...by looking it up on google.
