Not many airports in the world are exciting enough to do anything after the shops have closed. Some might have expensive internet that you could use that costs a mini fortune for a short time, but that's usually about it. About the most excitement after the last flight checks in that you can expect in most airports around the world is to be able to walk up and back and around the building at 90 year old lady pace just watching your time pass by until it eventually comes time to leave the airport. Just plan on having an extremely boring night. Maybe bring a book or something to read when you get sick of trying to get to sleep with no success.

I was going to suggest having a few drinks - but it might be a bit early in the morning for that!

I remember much about Melbourne airport by time we checked in at internal terminal had a coffee it was time to catch our flight to Sydney - you might find that by the time you get through check in and then security there might not be much of your 3 hours left - whether you are in domestic or international terminal.

Go duty free shopping! Plane spot! Or simply people watch - l love people watching - an airport is great for people watching!

Failing that you would be best bringing a bumper book of sudoku!

I can't imagine much going on. If I understand your question correctly though, you are getting in at 2:30 am? If so, then there's no need to wait till 5:30 to go to the city. The Skybus leaves every hour at that hour of the night (timetable).

And taxis will of course leave whenever you want them to leave :)

Unless I misunderstood your question and you are actually waiting for something else :) In which case, I think finding a comfy spot and trying to sleep a little is probably your best bet.
