So here I am, in Antarctica, and I get to watch this glacier calf ice from it's front. The ice chunks tend to be between the size of a football and a small house (0.3m^3 and 100m^3). I'd say what I'd consider a large calving occurs 10-15 times each day. But apparently it was not always like this, about 5 years ago you would consider yourself lucky to see/hear two of these in a 5 month season. I am at Palmer Station on Anvers Island, and my tent is on the waterfront opposite this glacier. Additionally the front of the glacier that is on land has receded about 30 feet this year, which has been standard over the past few years. So for me global warming is a fact, it is not a theory or a myth. When at home I do not drive a car, I try to use flights as little as possible for travelling, recycling is the norm, and I try to avoid terrestrial meats (ie everything except fish).
So here's my question, what is everyone else's take on global warming? Is it a myth made up by a bunch of tree-huggers or is it a reality with evidence that holds against rigorous testing? What do you incorporate into your daily agenda to minimize your impact?

Its real!!! What do you think, you can't deny;). Its no warm period which occurs every 300 years. Because since the seventies we see a steep line up. Its not natural. Weather records are broken all the time at the moment.

Im not too sure I know enough about global warming to have an opinion... but I recycle paper, cans and bottles ant home for the sake of the children of the future... (even if they are not mine... hehe)

Does that count???

Hey Sam

Its a serious problem and l think people just do not realise it - they actually do think its a myth and are selfish enough to think - sure l wont see the repercussions in my life time so why should l care?

I watched Al Gores "An Inconvenient Truth" recently and that really made me sit up and take note - glacier changes (ie shrinking) are taking place at a rapid pace - and it is within my life time. It was all the more ponient to me as l had just returned from New Zealand and the glaciers there are shrinking at a fast rate - and that is such a pity to deprive future generations of such wonders fetes of mother nature.

I do think we should be doing more - but each and every one of us should take tiny steps whether its switching to energy saving light bulbs, recycling rubbish or using renewable energy - if we all were to take such tiny steps they could make one huge change!

Good post!

I would be interested in others view point on how we can make a difference (no matter how tiny) to slow the effects of global warming.

Al Gore may not practice what he preaches but the facts about gobal warming and how we are harming the planet are nonetheless real even if he is a fake.

How can you give environmental ideas (which is indeed very much the truth), if you are personally abusing energy. It is just hypocryt. Fake guy who wants power. Al Gore's purpose is power and to be elected. He apparently he has nothing with the environment. Its disgusting. Don't say everyone to use energy saving lightbulbs and cars if you don't do it yourself.

thanks soo much for the interest
ok so clearly in the movie we see al gore getting escorted around in a private car etc. and maybe he does use more power than is necessary. But i personally don't think we should focus on his hypocrisy, more on the message he is trying to promote. We also need to remember that he is trying to spread the word to people who are not already on his side, sometimes those people need someone (ie Al Gore) that wears a suit and has a relatively large public profile before they would think about changing their views. Sorry if that's a little convoluted. It's also useful to understand that no one is perfect, and we have to pick our own battles of how we choose to make our impact on the world.

Phew - so have you noticed the global warming having an impact on what you can and can't do in your life?

Wouterrr - you mis understand me - l dont care if its Al Gore or Big Bird telling us the facts about gobal warming - its the facts that lm interested in not the person informing us - its the facts that need to get through to the masses.
