Calling all html, css, coding experts :) :)

I'm playing about with the postcard style (which i like very much) and i was wondering if there's a way to centre the content... so that my blogs and the navigation side bar would be in the middle ?

i'm not sure how it will look but i want to see if i prefer it that way.

i have changed parts of the css to say "center" because some were set to "left" but it's not changed anything.

can anyone help ?

also 2 other things...

if i don't want users to be able to change the style of my blog - then i loose the border of the navigation bar at the bottom.
my blog: http://testmm82.travellerspoint.com/ and here's a blog that uses it to show you what i mean:
http://tulsatrot.travellerspoint.com/

and is there any way i can move "comments (0)" to a new line ?

thanks,
mico82

It's kinda hard to make that work well for that blog layout, since the entire idea behind it is that it's liquid (changes based on the width of the browser), while centering content means you need to restrict the width.

The best I can do is this:
Go back to the default postcard style, and then start editing it from that default state again.
Scroll down a bit to where it says:

  1. wrapper {

margin: 0;
background: url(img/8/wrapper.gif) repeat-y;
min-width:750px;
/* Hack, IE doesn't listen to max/min-width, so this 'expression' hack should take care of it. */
width:expression(document.body.clientWidth < 800? "795px": "auto");
}

And change that code to:

#wrapper {
margin: 0 auto;
background: url(img/8/wrapper.gif) repeat-y;
width:750px;
}

That should do what I think you want to see, at the cost of some flexibility to the layout.

hey sander,

thanks for that. i changed the code but didn't like the look of it. it also centred the header and footer and it looked crap lol. thanks anyway.
if you know how to change just the content and sidebar then that would be a great help, thanks :)

also, do you know how to change the other things i mentioned ?

many thanks

You can apply that same code to #center, rather than to #wrapper, but that will cut the "stamp" in the upper left corner in half, as half of it is part of the header, and half of the main blog+nav bar. (That's why I gave the rule for #wrapper.)

Ooh, what _does_ look good is applying it to #blogcontent, although the photos than cause issues for people using a screen resolution of 800x600 (specifically, the content jumps underneath the nav bar).

As for the other issues: the lost bottom-bar graphic is something we should be able to fix from our side, but I'll need to look at all the blog stylesheets to determine what way of doing that would be best.

The "comments (nr)" link can go to the next line by adding the following rule:
.commentlink { display: block; }

thank you so so much !!

i now have the comments text on a new line :)

i tested the code in #blogcontent but i think i'll stick with the left alignment... 800 x 600 issue puts me off it too.

i would really appreciate you looking into fixing the nav border at the bottom... i'm a fussy person i know ;)
once it's fixed just pm me

thanks again,

Ok, I fixed this locally and on the test server. Sam and Peter will need to look at it and so it'll be a few days before it'll show up live. If you use the default postcard style you won't need to change anything to get the fix. If you have your own custom stylesheet based on postcard, you need to change the line that says:

#navigation #changestyles {

to instead say:

#navigation #changestyles, #navigation #navbottom {

hey,

i changed the text to read:

  1. navigation #changestyles, #navigation #navbottom {

and it didn't work.

so i changed it back to the default layout for postcard and it still doesn't work ?

any suggestions ?

thanks again for all your help.

As I said, "it'll be a few days before it'll show up live". You can make that change already though, and then when the fix will be pushed live, it'll automatically start working for you.

This change is now live.
