My wife and I are thinking of taking a trip with GAP Adventures to Ecuador. It is a 14 day trip centered around Quito that includes 4 days of 1-on-1 spanish language classes. While the trip is centered around Quito, it also includes visiting Bellavista Cloud Forest, Otavalo, Papallacta Hot Springs and Cotopaxi National Park.
Can anyone give us some input as to how this area of Ecuador is? How is Quito?
We spent 10 days in Peru last May and loved it. It was a typical Peru tour with time spent at the Tambopata Research Center and the sights in and around Cusco (Sacred Valley, Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu). It was fantastic.
Any input would be much appreciated.
I originally wanted to do a 14 day trip of Argentina and Chile but the trip to Ecuador is much cheaper from both a trip cost and airfare perspective.
Quito's nice, though not tremendously interesting; a good place to spend a few days, but definitely not more than that.
I haven't been to all of the places you mention, but as a whole Ecuador is really nice and beautiful; you'll enjoy it. Don't skip Cotopaxi; that's just amazing. I personally didn't like Otovalo, but I seem to be on my own on that one; everyone I ever talked to was enthusiastic about it.
It's a shame you will not visit Galapagos, it's a 90 minute flight from Quito (approx $380). I live here, and it's one place you must see in your lifetime.

i agree with bentivogli... Quito is nice for a few days, exploring the old town and walking through the dizzying streets, but any loner than that and you may get antsy...
I haven't been to Bellavista, but i did go to Mindo, which had an excellent sustainable lodge called El Monte... this is a beautiful area (close to bellavista) which i'm sure you will enjoy!
Otavalo will be fun for you... very touristy but exciting! everyone dresses in their traditional clothing to attract tourism, but there are some great deals here!
I didn't go to Papallacta or Cotopaxi, but i heard both are amazzing...
Quite honestly, you are bound to have a great time... be cautious if you are ever on your own, but don't be paranoid... most ecuadorians are extremely friendly and will help you out if you ever need it!!
Have a great trip!
i will have to agree with everyone else, quito only needs a few days of your time because there is so much else to see in ecuador. if you can make it to galapagos, it will be well worth the money, and its possible to visit 4 of the islands without paying for a cruise. the places your tour would take you are nice but theres so much more to see! i loved canoa on the coast, a beautiful beach town, the amazon, and vilcabamba. traveling throughout the country is hard because you´re almost alwaays on long buses going through mountains, but it really is beautiful, and very affordable.
