Quoting SairinLote

hey i'm considering buying a DSLR camera (nikon D40) but i'm worried about the size of the camera and how easy will it be to carry it around.
Otherwise i will go for a Canon Powershot S3 IS.
The thing that troubles me is that although D40 is better than S3, the later already has a zoom len attached to it. So if i want to Zoom with D40 i'll have to buy another set of lens which is +150euro (i think)

The quality of the Nikon SLR system with a D40 easily outweighs the quality of the Canon S3 - and adds the possibility to change lenses and accessories. No matter the difference in cost - if you want a really small camera with outstanding performance, go D40 ;)

I got my Canon XTi (or 400D in asia) and i LOVE IT!
what i would suggest you to consider is.
1) whether u really need one
2) budget
3) can you manage it if you got it, some people i knew they dont' even know how to hold a SLR.
4) whether you want to get another lens. sometimes for travel, i prefer to bring my 18-200mm lens, it lose a bit of sharpness, but it just more convinence.
5) do you have a digital point and shoot already, if so, bring it with you, if you don't i say think about that first. doesn't need to be highend, but something can take decent picture.

as for model, i say Canon XT, XTi, or Nikon D40, D40X, D50, D70 .. one on these list, consider this is your first DSLR.
