First vs Second class train transport

Travel Forums Europe First vs Second class train transport

Hi all! Four of us are heading for a month to Switzerland and Italy. We will be spending about 8 days in Switzerland so we have been considering getting an 8 day Swiss Saver Pass to travel around in Switzerland. Is there that much of a difference in comfort between a first class and second class ticket? What makes a first class ticket cost so much more? Considering we will have luggage and we want to have a scenic trip?? The difference in price is an extra 50% of a second class ticket to travel first class, so it is quite considerable.

The difference in comfort is not so big that it justifies the difference in price. Not by a long shot :)

There's hardly any difference in comfort, the only thing is that during peak times (rush hour) second class cars can be quite full and in first class you'll be almost guaranteed to get a seat. But I don't think that warrants the first class ticket. The other thing I can think of off hand is that there are a couple of scenic routes where you get double decker trains and the upper deck is often 1st class. But I don't think there's that many routes and you'll get a good view from the lower deck anyway.
I can't see much reason to fork out that much money for little benefit.

Thanks for the info, I think we will use second class then. We can rather spend the extra money on some interesting cheese in Switzerland :)

From what I've heard there is really little difference. In June I'm doing almost the same exact trip myself. I'm visiting a friend in Switzerland for a little less than a week then I'm off to Italy for a month. Maybe I'll see you there ;)
