Just to let you know that the official Route 66 route runs from Chicago to Los Angeles. The Route is sometimes hard to follow, because of other roads who have taken over the main route.
Utrecht is correct - parts of the original Route 66 no longer exist. My husband's cousin and two others took the Route 66 trip this past summer. They did Chicago - LA - Chicago over 21 days.
This site about the Historic Route 66 may be quite helpful to you. It has directions, detailed map, guides and forums.
The closest thing to Hwy 66 would be to start in Pasadena, California, and take Colorado Blvd (which becomes Foothill Blvd) straight east until you reach I-15, then cut north on I-15 to Barstow, then take I-40 east to Tulsa, Oklahoma. From there take I-55 north to Chicago, Illinois.
If you want to go coast to coast, you take I-94 east out of Chicago, get on I-80 and continue east all the way to New York City.
Have fun and enjoy your trip.
