Travel Forums Europe Want to travel Europe for 1 year, please give me advice

Me and my girlfriend are planning a trip to Europe for a year. We are in our early twenties and this would be our first trip out of the US(besides Mexico) We will have approximately $13,000 USD. We need any advice that we can get and any helpful sites to check out. We are thinking about just getting a van or something used while we are there. I am a chef, so most of the time I will just make dinner. We intend on staying mostly Hostels while we are there. In France I have a friend that we will stay with.

We are also thinking about just moving to a Country within Europe, so how would we go about getting citizenship in europe.

Thanks to anyone who can help,
Steve O.

Just keep in mind that you will have approx. 10,000 euro. As far as citizenship goes, where have you looked so far? It sounds like you've not yet done any of your own research at all.

(Does anyone use "my XXX and I" anymore?)

As a rule, you will need around 1600 USD per person and per month in Western Europe if you are on the road. This is living on a budget, cooking your own dinner and staying in hostels, not hotels! So if you travel constantly your money will last approximately 5 months, not a whole year.

If you stay in hotels, not hostels, your money will last around 2 months. Decent hotels start from around 40 EUR per night and per person for a room - that is 80 EUR (105 USD) per night for the 2 of you!

The difference between hostels and hotels:

The van alone will cost you around 2500-4000 EUR, if you want something roadworthy. Cost of fuel is between 5 to 7 USD per galleon.

The only way for you to make your dream come true is to either spent a lot of time in Eastern Europe where prices are lower or to rent an appartment.

visa issues:

If you intend to travel in the Schengen area for a full year, you need to apply for a residency permit. Best way to do this is to apply for a student visa (D+C Schengen) through one of the embassies or consulates of one of the Schengen states .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Visa

Currently the Schengen countries (full members) are:
Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Austria, Greece, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden

As of 31st Dec 2007, the following countries will become full members of the Schengen agreement:
Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia

With a normal tourist visa, you can travel only for 90 days within a 180 day period in all of the above countries combined. Not 90 days per country, 90 days for the whole of Europe!

Feel free to write to me about the visa issues. Also take a look at the posts I made in the past about Schengen visa, please.
