Hey all, im lookin at my first degree right now, and am really undecided between arts and social science or journalism, or some other humanities related courses, which arent much actually....

So to all u TPers who have left uni, what would u choose as a better informed degree choice? Like which would be more suitable for a career that allows me to travel and see the world?

Wouterr, i heard u are an arts and parties student? maybe u could advise me on that? ;)

hahaha. Well journalism works, but you must be lucky to be international journalist. Arts, only if you are really good. Then will be lft social science. But I don't know exactly what a social scientist does. Is it like a psychologist?

Psychology is part of social science... Theres like 20 subjects under social science like social work, Asian studies etc... im thinking of a major in political science, and maybe study social work or SEAn studies as well. Still very undecided though....

I would say journalsim too, but the international field is hard to get into, as Wouter said. Another choice would be political science or political journalism, if politics is an interest of yours.

I've met a few people who's degrees were in hotel/resort management. Their universities offered such programs and they earned their BA degree. An internship with a hotel or hotel chain was a requirement for graduation. The hotel chains would move them from hotel to hotel to work in different areas, such as reception, restaurant management, staffing, etc. We met one particular girl in Jamaica working for a resort. After x amount of time, she was transferred to Germany and then on to Paris. (I lost track of her in Paris.) She absolutely loved it because she got to travel and meet people from all over the world.

Hey thanks for the responses..

Isadora, thought of the hotel thing as well, but i think now its not a gd idea as i would not want to spend my career in casinos, since almost all hotel/resort management grads are channeled into the upcoming IRs at the moment - integrated resorts - euphemism for casinos in Singapore.... But thanks, would love to hear more before i make the choice....

I advice you between arts and social science or journalism, select social science.
I hope you will be succeed in your choice.

This is only MY opinion - but l did an Arts degree (Economic & Social History & Politics) - l was at the end qualified for NOTHING! There are so may Arts graduates out there trying to get a foothold in a career it can make competition fierce.

I would suggest you think of a more vocational degree with a clear direction of the career you want to follow. I know at a young age this can be hard to pinpoint and so an Arts degree seems like an easy stop gap. So perhaps journalism is a good choice - but to become a journalist - international or otherwise - is a hard area to break into so if you can supplement your choice with writing articles for school magizines or submitting articles to local publications/papers and the like you will increase your chances of breaking into journalism.

Good luck - its a tough decision and an important one too!

What interests you??

Are you open to other areas outside of the social sciences, such as ecology, biology - the "other" sciences?

At 17, I had 20 different things I thought I would like to do. What are some of yours?

(I'm asking because having a bit of information allows others to think "outside the box", so to speak.)
