Hi all,

I'll be arriving in Placencia, Belize in a few weeks. I plan on staying for about 10 days. Is it a good idea to rent a car and drive over to Guatemala/Honduras from Placencia? It looks close on a map, but I'm not sure about the roads there. Any suggestions on places to go would also help!

Thanks a lot!
Riley

I am not sure, but in the south of Belize there are not many border posts, maybe none. The most used way to get to Guatemala or Honduras from Belize is by boat from Placencia or Punta Gorda. Don't know if cars are allowed, but if you are going to Livingston it is of no use, because you can't go any further by road. From Puerto Barrios in Guatemala you might be able to go further to Honduras by car, but of course first check if your rental car is allowed on the boat from Belize.

Placencia is at the end of a penicsula that has 22 miles (or so) of bad, rough dirt road. We based tours from there but didn't have a car and I guess I was kind of glad.

Don't know where you're going in Guatemala but Tikal isn't a day trip from Placencia. It has to be 3 to 3.5 hours to the border and another 2 hours to Tikal (if that's where you're going).

If you rent a car, make sure you can take it to Guatemala and still have insurance.
