Hi guys, my gf and I are off to South america for a year in may, will be splitting our time 50/50 camping/hostels. Just wondering what you would suggest for a mattress whilst camping, haven't had much luck with air mattresses in the past, but don't want to be lugging around a big foam one either.

We will be camping in a tent. If your staying in hostels, you won't need one.

hey,

if you are eliminating out those air mattresses, where you have to pump your ass out manually or by an electric motor, you can try checking out www.thermarest.com

those air mattresses are self inflated when you open them up and its very very compact. for a 5ft fella, the thermarest may weight only 500g - 650g. all mattresses are under 800g if im not wrong. but of course when you want to keep them, you have to deflate them manually.

its one of the good ones around, so check it out.

I have a 1.5" thick Thermarest pad and a Big Agnes Dual Core air mattress. The Thermarest insulates better and requires less time/work to inflate while the Big Agnes is more comfy and lighter/smaller to pack but takes longer to inflate (using your lungs).
