Travel Forums Africa and The Middle East Sanaa, Yemen, trips around the area

Globerovers has indicated that this thread is about Yemen

Please help me plan my 7 days around the Sanaa area. I'll spent at least 3 days in Sanaa itself and the rest around the area:

1. Would a day trip to Shibam, Kowkaban, Hababa and Thulla be the highlight of that area or would it be important to include any other nearby villages?

2. Is $65 for car/driver a good fare...or should I rely on public transportation. Could I do these 4 places in 1 day using public transportation.

3. Would this be a good 3-day drip: Sanaa to Manakha (hiking in the area) then to Zabid, then Khokha by the sea, then Taizz, Ibb and Jibla and back to Sanaa. Where would be best to sleep on this trip? Is $180 for car and driver reasonble for this trip or could I get it lower.

Thanks

Isn't Shibam in the more eastern parts of Yemen, like 10 hours by bus from Sanaa? I thought it was. So if it is, that would make a hell of a day trip...;)

True, but there are 2 Shibam's. The far away one is 10 hours drive while just 30 min north of Sanaa is another Shibam.

So far for Yemenite imagination for naming places...
But isn't the one with he ancient skyscrapers in the east?

I thought Manaka was stunning. Def. worth a trip. Prices compare pretty well to the ones I got. Suppose it depends what kind of car? We payed $75 for a 4 wheel drive (without a driver) as we were doing some off-roading.
