Planning my first trip to SA for the fall and I would like to know how much money I can expect to spend on a monthly basis. Tentative plans include EC, Peru, Bol, Chi, Arg, Bra, Ven.
Now, as a shoestringer, I plan on camping as much as possible, but will stay at hostels in between.
Outside of activities, how much could I possibly spend? LP's SA on a shoestring says about $20 a day. How accurate is this?
Hard to say, depends of your levels of comfort and spend...
When I was 19 years old I traveled peru and bolivia for 2 months with 200 US... that was extreme as u can imagine.
20 is ok for backpacking (Apart of entrances, flights, buses)
For spending money I normaly recomend my budget/adventure pasengers (I am a tour leader) 28 a day and through experience i found that they spend only 18 as a media (Few drinks, meals , personal expenses, very little shoping)... but i provide everything else (Hotels, tours, guides, flights, buses, boats, trains, etc, etc, etc)
Get in touch if need more help.
Have lots of fun!

If you are camping, then I think 20 a day is probably good for Chile, Argentina and Bolivia.
I spent about $40 a day when I was down there, $15-$20 on hotels and $15-$20 on food, drinks and incidentals. I wasn't going cheap at all.
Obviously, the bigger cities are more expensive.
