I ma planning to travel from Sao Paulo to Ilhabela and from Rio to Buzios. I have been told by several people that rodoviarias can be very dangerous and I would just like to check on this. What are people's experiences of this?

Also, my trip from SP will be Sunday morning. Do I need to buy a ticket in advance?

Many thanks!

Esp. the stories about Tiête are a bit scary, but people I met who used it say that it's just about as unsafe as any regular bus terminal. I used Barra Funda a couple of times myself, and can vouch for the safety of that one. By daylight, that is.

I used many times both rodoviairas.
As Bentivogli said:" By daylight no problem at all".There is a lot of security.
