Hi

I am taking a year sabbatical in May. The plan is to island hop round the Caribbean, then go on to central america and possibly south america.

I will be flying into Antigua(Caribbean) ,from the UK, which will be my base as I am staying with a friend. I also have another friend who lives in Monsterrat.

I don't really have a set itinerary as I am not sure how long I will stay on each island. As you can imagine some have more to offer than others. I hope that island hopping should be quite simple using airlines such as Liat/Caribbean or where possible by ferry. I am not sure if this may work out quite expensive. I have heard that the airlines have stopped doing airpasses.

I am concerned that maybe I should have a set itinerary or plan for Central America. The plan was to work my way down from Mexico though I am not quite sure the best way to do it. I am not sure if and how I can get there direct from Antigua. Possibly via Puero Rico .
Should I book to go on an organised tour of Central America, budget allowing? Though do normally prefer independent travel. My spanish is very limited though I am working on it! Also toying with idea of learing spanish, doing a TEFL course in Costa Rica and teaching Honduras!!

There is a minefield of stuff on the internet and at the mo am suffering from information overload!!

Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you!!

Travelling Island to Island in the Caribbean isn't nearly as easy as you might wish.

It's an expensive cumbersome place to travel in and I suggest you head to South America ASAP-it offers many more interesting options for the budget traveller.
