Me and my boyfriend are planning to travel around Central America for a few weeks in May. We were going to fly into Mexico City, travel down to Guatamala and Belize (where he has family) and then back to Mexico. My boyfriend has been put off going as he has been told that it is dangerous and difficult to travel around? Is this really the case? I would very much appreciate some honest opinions. Also could anyone recommend an itinery? we only have 3-4 weeks. I would like to go to as many countries/places as possible. Is it too adventurous to think we could make it down to Costa Rica and back?
Its no more dangerous than any other country and as long as you use common sense you shouldnt have anything to worry about.
Ive just spent 10 months in Central and South America and havent had anything stolen or been mugged/robbed etc etc TOUCH WOOD.
As for a schedule so many people try to fit in as much as possible and never get th chance to appreciate things properly.
Maybe you should just decide on a few main places you want to see or do.
Yes you could make it to Costa Rica but believe me you will spend more time on buses than actually visiting places.
I spent 6 weeks in Mexico in May 2005 and that was a perfect amount of time for me.And then about 1 month in Costa Rica.
i did belize to costa rica in 3 1/2 months ..nothing particular happened to me and most of the trip i was alone ...i do speak spanish so it was easier to travel around but i found people to be very helpful ..
belize is safe ... and guatemala was very friendly and easy to go around ........i think you should be fine, i don't think its more dangerous than any other place ...
enjoy central america ...
I have done this trip many times , I am latino, I speak spanish so I pretty much blend in with the others' I have done it alone and I never encounter any problems along the way.
If you are planning to go to Guatemala from MEX by bus, then thats going to be at least 22 hours sitting in a bus. Keep your belongings with you- less is more
You can also take the bus from Guatemala City to Costa Rica
That trip will take 2 days, you will spend the night in El Salvador and 1 more night in Manana, Nicaragua before you get to Costa Rica.
Don;t bring jewelry or expensive gadgets
Dont walk alone at night!
