I am going to Sao Paolo and Rio since April 3th to 8th. I have already bought my tickets (GOL) Lima-Sao Paolo-Lima, and now I am planning what to do there.
Initially, I want to stay most time in Rio, because all the people reccommend me that, but I am open any suggestion.
I have thought to take a bus from Sao Paulo-Rio in order to know roads, mountains, fields from Brazil. To return (Rio-Sao Paolo) I will take a fly.
My one problem is the accomodation in Rio, I am looking for hostels or backpackers nice an cheaps near to beachs. I found some places in internet, however I would like to know the opinion of persons than stayed there.
Thanks a lot
I would recommend staying in Santa Teresa. It is a great area and really close to Lapa, where the center of night life is. I always recommend Casa Mangomango - it is an old renovated mansion... an incredible house, great people... and much more low key than the normal hostel. It has internet, a great pool... and an incredible location. The address is Rua Joaquim Murtinho, 587 - Santa Teresa. You can show up without reservation and they will always find you a place. The owners name is Julie - she is Irish, been living in Rio for 9 years. There are some long term residents there... very bohemian... lots of musicians including one of the most famous local sambistas who rocks Lapa every Friday night... his name is none other than Fabio. This place is more than a hostel it is an experience and is the same price as the cheapest hostels... it is just kept a secret for those in the know. So enjoy!
Hi my name is alexandre I live in Copacabana and what Hattie says is true....Lapa is verry nice to know....but if you are intrested in stay near the beaches try to find hostels in copacabana or ipanema and from those places to Lapa is easy to go by bus or metro......about 10 min.
I highly recommend Santa Teresa. Check a B&B called Vila Casanova ( www.ridearoundrio.com/vilacasanova ). Great place, really pretty, safe and clean, and you will be able to meet both locals and tourists there. The owners are Brazilian artists, and the place is very quiet, with nice swimmingpool and breakfast. The place at Joaquim Murtinho street mentioned before is probably another good option - and there are many others in Santa Teresa area.
I stayed last year at the Che Lagarto hostel in Ipanema, and was really good, met really nice people, and the staff were fab. Very well located and in a safe area (one block back from Ipanema beach)

Hi I have just ended a 2 month Stay in Rio.
Santa Teresa is a beautiful area and you will enjoy staying there very much. However, if you are really intent on staying near the beaches this may not be your best option since you will need to take either a bus and a metro or 2 buses to get to the beaches. I don't know how long you are intending to stay at the beach but I did find it a pain to get to the beach, although that may be due to me being eager to get to the beach!!
I would definitely recommend staying in the Botafogo easy hostel - very friendly and helpful staff, good clean rooms, a gorgeous mini pool outside, very central location - everywhere's a short walk/bus/metro ride away, organised trips around the city and the most amazing coffee for breakfast! Check out the website:
Have an amazing time!
Many thanks everybody, I appreciate your help. I felt a little lost about Rio, but with your help I am knowing many things and many places about this fascinating city. I am ckecking each site that you recommend me.
In the web that Cookieyum suggest me. I found a good map with worthy information of buses, places, etc. Great.
Inicially I thought to stay near beachs because they are very famous, but I am not especially too interesting in them, due to I live near beach. If I can arrive to beach en 10-15 minutes by bus is good for me.
So try to stay in Santa Tereza .....you can go to Copacabana or Ipanema and Pao de Acucar and Corcovado .....is simple and easy....have a nice trip....
