Italian Winter Trip Sane?

I plan on traveling to italy Dec-Jan 04/05. I read somewhere that Italy "shuts down during the winter months" this true or will we have a fun and successful trip?

Depends what your looking for. Yes, Italy does close down quite a bit, but that's standard. Allot of the major things will be open, albeit at reduced hours, so requires a little planning. But significantly less queues, so can be a good time to visit.

Some hostels will be shut, many camping places as well, although that shouldn't be a problem as demand is much lower.

Italy Shuts Down?

Well, only the coastal resorts and summer rentals in Tuscany.

There are ski resorts in northern Italy that will be open for business.

The major cities will all be busy with Christmas shoppers as well.

Just stay away from the coast and the lakes and you'll see plenty of life.

You might not get sunny skies in the pictures of churches and you won't be able to sit on
the piazzas sipping over-priced Cappucino, but hotel prices should be lower.

If you're travelling by train, at the least the compartments shouldn't be full and you won't
find yourself stepping over sleeping bodies in the corridor, everytime you want to use the

Don't worry !

I'll have fun in italy for winter time !

Of course the most populated places during winter are Alps where people goes skiing and there you'll get full more or less everywhere from 24 dec till 06 jan. After the 06 you'll get hard discounts and free places.

Depends on what you want to see i mean Venice Florence and Rome for sure will befull of turist while the coast almost every where the hotel are closed except some area like rimini and riccione where the people goes for discos and for have fun so they are still open during winter time.
