I'm 21 and have been living in the same dead end town all my life floating from jobs that are available rather than what I want to do. After recent unemployment and cash flow problems I lost my flat and I'm now living back with my parents giving me the opportunity to save some cash for what I really want to do which as you have probably gathered is to see some of the world! I am thinking of thailand, vietnam to begin with.
I am right at the beginning of my saving and the whole thing seems so daunting I just dont really know where to start planning or looking and stumbled across this site today so thought I would ask for some tales and advice to help me out!
Asia, as u suggested sounds like a good choice.
It is completely different, from England and many countries there are very cheap to travel in.
Well this is the place to start.
My advice is just start surfing. Think about where you might like to travel to, pick a forum and just read.
Thats what I did. What was initially a vague idea in my head about going to Europe built slowly into a protracted round the world trip.
All with the help of the people here at TP
Hey Harry -
Congrats on your new direction!
A good starting point could be popping into the local library and checking out some Lonely Planet or Rough Guide travel guides on countries/cities that look intriguing (you can always buy your own when you have a firm destination in mind). They cover the whole spectrum, from the practical to the inspirational.
Plus, sites like this one (TP is the best, Lonely Planet and BootsNAll aren't bad either) are good for up to date info!
Im in the same situation. Im working at the moment to save some money and taking trips here and there as work holiday allows but Im hoping to soon go travelling long term. The best thing Ive found is to (as someone has already suggested) get a vague idea of where you want to go and pick up some travel books (lonely planet are the best imo). Once you've got an idea and the information you need you can start choosing where you want to visit, its then a case of deciding your budget/timescale and picking from your list where you can afford/really want to go.
Did you know that there are many jobs overseas that you can work at while you travel. I just finished 6 months in China working as a english teacher. Vietnam is desperate for native english speakers.
Check out -
or if you like the caribbean why not try working on a cruise ship, I did that for five years. Check out - http://www.carnival.com
look at the bottom of the page for fun jobs and submit your resume.
also if your a young age you can get a working holiday visa pretty much for everywhere and find seasonal work.
[ Edit: sorry, no promos in the forum please. ]
Sorry those urls didn't seem to work
for teaching english in vietnam
Or you can look under google for dave's esl cafe
if your looking for cruise work
Thanks everybody for your help still any more ideas or extra advice would be greatly welcomed. I'm particularlyinterested in the idea of teaching english in vietnam, but do you not need to have completed a 'tefl' course to do this? Also the link takes me to a dining guide webpage! does anybody know of the correct one?
