Access to computers

Travel Forums Asia Access to computers

Hello guys and girls!

I am planning on travelling Thailand soon and I wondered about access to computers. Basically I do freelance webdesign and hope to continue to work to some extent whilst I am there.

The ideal would be to take a laptop. Is this a good idea? Are there secure places I could put it whilst travelling around. What about if I stayed in a hostel?

If that is not an option are there places where I can go to use computers for a few hours a day? If so what sort of cost would be involved?

Thanks for your advice

I have no idea about laptops, but where there are tourists, there are internet cafes. And many of them. I can gaurantee that in just about every town you go to, even in beach resorts, you will be able to find at least one, if not 20 places where you can use the internet. In really touristy places, like Bangkok and Chaing Mai, just about every hotel has a few computers in their lobby. The quality of computers and speed vary, so if you check out a few different places I'm sure you can find a place where you can get some work done. Rule of thumb I find in Asia is that internet cafes geared toward tourist tend to have crappy computers and higher prices. Internet cafes a little outside tourist ghetos that are geared toward local kids playing video games have quality computers and cheaper prices if you can find them. I cant remember prices right now, but it would be no more than a dollar or two an hour.

I agree- I have been all over SE Asia and just about everywhere, even small towns, has internet cafes usually with decent prices. True some are slow, but just about everywhere worked well enough for me. Personally I would not bring a laptop for fear of it breaking en route, or being stolen and think you could do just fine with internet cafes. but that was just me- Now even if you will be traveling in luxury and staying in nice places where it would be safe, the extra weight of a laptop would be an inconveninece.

Hello Notting

There are certainly plenty of places, where u can go, to use computers for a few hours a day. Internet cafes are everywhere. Although the connection is not always fast. I was in Thailand last November, but I have completely forgotten what it costs, to use the internet.

If u do take your laptop, either take it everywhere with u, or else ask the guesthouse or hostel owner to look after it. If u feel u can trust them, that is. Dont ever leave it in your room, even if u lock your room.

Hi guys

Thanks for all of your input. I've come to the conclusion that I definately need to bring a laptop because of the software that I need to work.

Are there any places that I could leave it for say a few weeks when I need to travel a bit lighter. Are there any drop safe places where I could leave valuables for a while?
