My name is Hayley and i'm headed over to Canada early november 04, hopefully to get a job at a ski resort, i'm thinking either Whistler or Big White.
I'm going over alone and was wanting to talk to people who are heading over at the same time, just to have a few familiar contacts to make the whole first week or so less daunting!
Id love to hear from anyone who has already done a season, or who has more of an idea about canada than i do....
So feel free to email me at h_ashton_1983 or firstname.lastname@example.org
i can't offer any advice but i'm doing the same thing...most likely whistler...so i'm interested in any info as well
i'm heading over too. i have a phone interview with big white/silver star and lake louise on monday through owh. so hopefully i have a job lined up to take some stress out. but if i dont get a job, then i'll either head to whistler or big white still. it just means getting there earlier than i planned which will stuff up a few things.
what questions have you got cos i'm a bit blank just thinking right now. i've a friend that did a season at whistler a few years ago so she's been filling me in on all my queries.
My plan at the moment is to prebook an interview with blackcomb and head there for the job fair in late october.
What did your friend do about accommodation when she first arrived?
And did she find it easy to get work?
good luck with your fone interview!!!
My friend got there after all the job fairs so all the hotel/mountain jobs were gone. I think she had a bit of trouble finally getting a front desk sort of job at a spa. only thing was the job didn't come with a mountain pass and all that but i think it was better pay and accomadation than the mountain jobs.
her hints to me if i go there without a job is toogo just before the job fair to really get in first but then your presented with the problem of expenses of living for a month before your job even begins. i guess if you want to do a month of travelling then is a good time. i hopefully will do a month of travelling on my way to the rockies.
Hope some of that helps.
Keep the questions coming, i'll see what i can come up with.
I'm heading over by myself to Canada in March 05 for a year, hopefully to catch the end of the season at whistler. It would be great to know how you get on with the jobs and accomodation deal while you are there. I know I'll be at the end of the season but still hoping to pick up some work while I'm there.
will try and give more info when i get there...
oh and hey you're from one of my favourite places on earth...!
Hey I'm also going to Canada, will leave The Netherlands at the beginning of October. But since I'm not from the common world I don't have a working visa yet till I arrive in Canada and find an employer that wants to hire me. So that's my only concern. I'll keep you guys updated with info when I'll arrive in Whistler. And Hayley don't worry about going through the first weeks. It will be loads of fun. You''ll make friends in no time. Be sure that you take enough money with you to come through the 1st 2 months. 1st payday start of Januar and cost of skipass can $ 1300 for a seasonpass for Whistler Blackcomb. Rent is pretty high also.
I've been emailing the people at whistler a bit, í'll probably be blacklisted and they'll know my name and be known before i get there as the annoying chic who asks alot of stupid questions... anyways, they said if you get a job with intrawest you get a season pass, so u dont have to pay for it- my understanding anyways, and as of mid september when the job positions are released you can call up and book an interview for sometime during the job fair...
but the people at whistler have been really helpful, im so xcitd now!
