My girlfriend and i are looking for a nice quiet, untouristy beach for a 10 day chill out next week, but i'm not sure whether to go to Koh Chang or Koh Phangan.

I've heard there are some great spots on both, so my query is which is best and if anyone has some recommendations for beaches and places to stay? We would be looking at a budget to mid range prices.

Thanks people!

Hello Drewster

I cant comment on Koh Chang, but I loved Koh Phangan

I stayed on Ao Chalok and Coconut beach. Both lovely.
Here is a link, for coconut beach.

And if u are determined to get off the tourist trail, what about this place
http://www.hornbillhut.com/

Somebody I met recommended it, to me. I have not been there yet, but intend to go. I dont know anybody else who went there, except the person who recommened, so it wont be tourist swamped.

Phangan rocks! its got really really quite beaches on the west and north coasts ("joon" beach huts are nice, close to thong sala and laem son was really nice too) but it also has haad rin down in the south east which is a relly good place to go and chill during the day and party on the beach nearly every night! the full moon party is there too which alot of people head down for. didnt do Koh Chang but i can totally recommened Phangan. Its also fairly safe for the mopeds, which is a great way to see the island. had alot of fun there and going back in a few months.

Nice one people!

Well i think we've decided to give Koh Phangan a bash! So has anyone got any other recommendations for this island??

Think we might try a few places around the west and north coast but as we are limited to about 10 days i could do with some help to ensure we make the most of it!

Thanks once again people!

check online to see when the full moon party is in Haad Rin, its a massive beach party, if you get the chance you should go to it (even if you decide to leave eary you'll have bragging rights over mates who havent been!)
The west and North are really nice loads of very quite beaches with huts on them to rent for a couple of quid a night, or nicer villa types for a bit more cash (better showers and air-con, which i dont think is needed to be honest, just use a fan).
if you go to stay in Haad Rin, rather than get a taxi for a few quid, id recommend staying on sunset beach rather than sunrise beach as its quieter and costs slightly less (the parties every night are on sunrise so can be really loud if you just wanna get some sleep).
wherever you go you will love it!

Hey Mel, I stayed at Coconut beach too! I loved it - really secluded and the best food ever! Had to leave something under a rock outside beach hut B4 cause I didn't want to travel with it. Might still be there actually...Definately recommend this place!

I suppose u know Joe then, Emma.
The Swiss guy. I met him in a bar, on one of the beaches. He was so nice and helpful, to us. And he even offered us a bungalow at a cheap price. Can I email him, and offer your stash, as a thank you? Where exactly is the rock?

I never met Joe! There weren't any swiss guys there when I stayed - just the thai family. They were all really lovely :) Does Joe run/own the place?

The stash is actually under a plant pot or a rock next to the plant pot outside the B4 bungalow Joe is most welcome to it although I put it there in January 2005 so it may induce super powers by now

Joe owns the place.
The ants have probably looked under the flower pot, long ago.
Did u notice, if u leave an open packet of cigarettes around, in your bungalow, the ants bite holes in them, so they are no good anymore. ;)
