katz has indicated that this thread is about Germany

Hello! I want to travel from berlin to krakow in August taking in any interesting places on the way. I know that there is a night train but have heard some weird stories about gassing on the trains - is this true???!!

Anyway, it would be nice to take in some other places on the way (possibly go into CR) so any tips on routes would be much appreciated! I have just under 2 weeks! THANKS!!

What do you mean?

Haven't heard anything lately on this route. Afterall, this is Germany to Poland. The gassing stories were about Bulgarian and Turkish trains.

Have fun!

Krakow/Warsaw - Prague had a problem a few years ago with gassing/drugging as it is mostly used by backpackers, but I haven't heard anyt problems for a while after a small operation where a few people were arrested.

Only other places i have heard of it are occassional one offs in Italy (mostly unconfirmed) and occassionally in the Balkans. Never heard of any problems on German-Polish services.

Hello Katz

That is something that happens. At least, it is rumoured, to happen. I dont know how often, or on which routes. Apparently, some gas is released into train compartments, to make passengers sleep more deeply, so they can be robbed more easily.
Sleep in your sleeping bag, to protect your moneybelt. That will make it very difficult, for somebody, to rob u, even if they do gas the place. ;)

if you hesitate about taking the train, you could always take the plane (Easyjet: Berlin-Schönefeld to Krakow)

Cheers for advice....anyone know how much the train costs?

This is the webpage of Polish Railway Service, it's a route planner so you can check whether there is the connection or not. Oh, by the way, you have to enter destination point. Fill in Krakow, and then it will ask you to specify your claim. Click on 'Krakow Główny'. Not sure if prices are given, but check it out. I hope it will help.

I think the gassing stories are made to scare American backpackers :) i hav never met anyone or heard anything in my travels to lend any amount of truth to these stories.

On the way to Krakow stop in Torun -

we got stuck there for 4 days as it was so nice :)

Hello Katz

The German train company does some very good special offers.
If us live in Europe, u can buy your ticket online.
A very good offer would be Berlin to Krakow for 29Euros(for a seat. A sleeper would cost more. But they also have good special offers, for those). Since u are going in August, u can look out for such an offer, for the next couple of months. Here is the link, for the night trains.
Change it to English language, if u want, by just clicking on the tab with English, on it.
