So I'm aware that credit cards are accepted in Thailand. What about Cambodia & Laos? I'd like to use my cc for hotel purchases and the more expensive stuff.

Regarding cc scams, has anyone experienced getting scammed in SE Asia? Will I get scammed if I use my cc to book a hotel? Or would that happen in more shady settings or small businesses?

I wouldn't use any credit (or debit cards) for any cheap purchase. I would use cash for items like restaurants, street vendors and stores. There is some credit card fraud, just like other countries, today it is so easy to simply call your credit card numbers in to a contact in another country and you end up with charges that you don't discover until you get home!

If you use a CREDIT CARD to take money out of an ATM you do have to pay a fee for each transaction. Some fees are quite high, check with your credit card issuer to see what they charge. Also it is a good idea to tell them which countries you are visiting. If you are subject to big fees for ATM use take out the largest amount to cut down on big fees for small withdrawals.

I never used credit or debit cards in Laos or Cambodia, I used U.S. dollars with some small denominations and local money for cheap purchases. (When you only stay in cheap hotels there is no reason to use a credit card to pay the bill.)

Don't leave Cambodia or Laos with their currency because it is hard to unload AFTER you leave the country! Usually you can convert the money over at the airport when you leave or spend it down.

Don't take only one credit card with you, have a spare just in case an ATM machine eats your card or it gets lost somehow!

Travelers checks are easy to cash in Thailand, 33 baht per check, only get the large denominations. If you go with TCs some credit unions and banks may sell them to you commission free if you are a member. (My credit union sells me travelers checks free of commission and pays the first 5 ATM charges.)

Its the same with Vietnamese Dong. spend whatever you can in the country. As its stronger than Cambodian Riel you dont tend to get change in US dollars (like you do in Cambodia). as a result if you arent carefull with your withdrawls you can end up with quite alot of Dong in your pocket that you cant change out of the country (as my travelling pal found out!)
There are loads of cash machines in Vietnam and plenty in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh in Cambodia so its not a problem.
didnt stay in any hotels, but the smaller guesthouses dont usually take credit cards. but many of the hotels do from what i saw.
as for credit card scams, its the same as most countries. if they want to scam you one way they try is by performing the transaction away from you, out of sight and scan it twice. just make sure you can see what they are doing and you should be fine.
