I am crazy about castles and I love to visit them. I would like to start this thread so people can tell which castles they think are worth to visit, which castles can inspire or even scare. Suggestions and ideas. I can start by telling you that although I don't know many castles the one that really inspired me was Edinbrugh Castle in Scotland. It has magnificent views of the city of Edinbrugh. There are many leisure options inside the castle, it is a city for itself. The Scottish Crown Jewels, the church, museums,... Also a guided tour of Cardiff Castle in Wales is not to be missed.

I love castles too and I have visited a few in Europe. Austria has a few impressive ones. Salzburg's fortress (it was never inhabited by royalty) the Hohensalzburg, is a great place to visit, and you can visit a neighbouring fortress about half an hours train journey due south to the little town of Werfen, the Hohenwerfen fortress. There they have falconry shows at least once a day. A great show not to be missed.

I also love castles.

Two that I really enjoyed was Warwick Castle and Leeds Castle.

Next time you're in the Netherlands, visit the Muiderslot. Very nice, as close to the prototypical castle as no other.

I love Edinburgh Castle, it's gorgeous. I loved exploring every bit of it. I also liked Stirling Castle, it was very interesting!

I think Edinburgh Castle whilst really cool and steeped in history is an extorionate entrance price! I loved the Tower of London also - especially the White Tower and Traitors Gate! I love the fact it dates as far back as Norman Times - just imagine the historical scenes that castle has witnessed!

In Wales l remember visiting Carnarvon Castle years ago which is pretty good and restored. But this may be a distorted view mind you as it must be about 17 years since we visited there!

In Ireland you can visit Kilkenny Castle for a good tour of the castle, up north there is Dunluce Castle which is in ruins but very good to look at and has a great costal drive.

Whilst not exactly a castle The Rock of Cashel in Ireland (in Cashel and its a monastry) is another great spot and if you get there as the sun is setting it can be spectacular (warm up warm as parts are in ruins again!)

I have to agree with Petra M. on hohenwerfen castle, and I would combine it with a trip to Eisreisenwelt (also in Werfen).

I would also cast a vote to the Alcazar in Segovia. (perfect place to visit on a daytrip from Madrid.) The location, the views, and the rooms you can visit are just beautiful. Also the Old town, and the Roman Aquaduct are worth a visit, as are the numerous old churches. So for me it makes a perfect daytrip.

LOL, Heather. Funny you should say that, because when I visited Edinburgh Castle, I paid £10.50 for entry and when I went to the Tower of London, I ended up paying £15!

I enjoyed visiting Tower of London too. Spent a good deal of time exploring it.

I went to Edinburgh last summer and the castle is lovely, not cheap but the money is worth it..what a view! the path to get there is also a very nice walk from Princes Street park up the hill.

yeah visiting castles is a hoby of mine.

I thought Edinburgh castle was a waste of money- Scotland has so many great castles in the countryside that are much nicer and less money.

Donnator Castle is stunning - Near Stonehaven, I was just at Campbell Castle - near Dollar - was quite impressive - in a nice glen as well for hiking.

Theres a cool castle in Doune too - where Monty Python was filmed :):):)

Dirleton Castle near North Berwick as well is worth a day trip from Edinburgh.

In fact if you have any questions about Scottish Castles ask me - or check my gallery too.

France is great for castles - especially in the North (Brittany)

Austria has nice castles - in Tyrol especially - but they are small in comparison.

In Slovakia is the largest castle I have ever seen - Spisky Hrad - if you like castles - i strongly suggest that -its near Levoca in a small village in the East.
