Personally I loved the castles in Bavaria, Germany.

Favs include:
- Neuschwanstein Castle (the castle Walt Disney based their logo on) -- Hohenschwangau
- Nuremberg Castle

Definately worth checking these out if you love castles.

In Britain I like small ruined castles, that have a sense of romance about them. There are loads in Scotland and Wales, but my favourite is Pendragon Castle in Cumbria, rumoured to be the seat of Uther Pendragon, father of King Arthur.

I also think the Cathar castles in the Languedoc region of France are fascinating.

Excellent idea for a thread audry79!

If you travel to the south of the UK and you are on your way to Battle where the famous 1066 battle took place then take a short detour to Bodiam Castle.

This Castle is amazingly beautiful from the outside: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-bodiamcastle.htm

Inside the Castle is derelict (unlike, for example, Warwick Castle) but is still worth a visit and has a good view of surrounding country side. The fee is small as you’ll see via the link.

Also, on the way to Littlehampton in the South coast you can see the impressive Arundel Castle: http://www.castles-abbeys.co.uk/Arundel-Castle.html

Well worth visiting!

If you want castles go to France. There are many, many castles there. If you have the money you can even chose to spend a night in one. Quite a few rent out rooms :)

I have to admit I haven't seen many castles outside of my own country, which are beautiful and exotic for Europe because they are mostly from the Ottoman period.

But I'd also love to see some of those in Scotland. I find them very romantic.

People, why has nobody mentioned Eilean Donan Castle in Scotland, the world's most photographed castle? Here's another one that you all well know. Some other, less famous castles:
Slot Loevesteijn, near Gorinchem in the Netherlands;
Valkenburg Castle, Valkenburg aan de Geul, the Netherlands;
Bouillon castle, Bouillon, Belgium;
Trakai Island Castle, Lithuania;
Fortress in Travnik, Bosnia-Herzegovina;
Saint Ivan's Fortress, Kotor, Montenegro;
Kalemegdan Fortress, Belgrade, Serbia.

And I forgot to mention Castle Cséjthe, Slovakia, the home of the infamous Blood Countess, Elizabeth Bathory.

I would like to hear more about the castles in Wales and Scotland. How about the castles in France? Any suggestions?
