I'm planning my first backpacking trip ever and I'm a bit lost about how much to budget. I see estimates everywhere of how much to budget daily, but does that include overland travel between cities?
Estimates I've seen for Thailand range from $8 a day (guess that means staying in one place and sitting under a tree all day, every day?) to $20-$25. So if I budget $20-25 a day plus a bit of emergency money, is that it? Or do I need to think about how many bus/boat/whatever trips I'll be taking and add that on?
If you come during the summer low season this should be enough as prices are much cheaper then for accommodations. I would think the $8USD is for lodging only. The most expensive thing is beer in the pubs. Local transportation by bus and train is cheap and if you take the overnight train or bus you save money on accommodations for the evening. You will be fine with $25USD per day.

12USD a day. Perfect for India atleast
Thanks Randy & Ning,
Erm, ...whose summer do you mean?
I would say including accomidation, food, transport, museum entries, and a few beers then $20 a day in Thailand is plenty.
In India, $12 is fine, but more if you drink beer (except Goa, Sikkim and Pondicherry where its cheap).
