Hey all, a friend of mine is travelling into Thailand in a few days and shes really concerend about safety. She doesnt have a set itenerary, so shes pretty much open to anything..What's the word? How are things there right now? She's travelling alone, however, ovbiously aware of the usual safety precautions..any help would be greatly appreciated!
I have been to Thailand, a couple of times.
It is the only country, in the world, where I have never experienced sexual harassment. It is a lovely peaceful place, for women traveling.
Violent assaults are very rare, but do happen, so avoid isolated places after dark. Also, your friend should be very careful, if she goes to full moon parties. Robberies and asaults are more common during these.
Muggings are rare, but bag snatchings are not. So your friend should avoid having money, passport etc, in a bag, hanging over her shoulder. Also, avoid leaving valuables and important doccuments, in guesthouse rooms. They are easy to break into and often robbed. But dont worry about your friends personal safety, in the guesthouse rooms. I have never heard of anybody being personally attacked, even though the rooms are so easy to get into.
Also, bags put in the luggage hold, on over night busses are often riffled through and things stolen. So your friend should no leave valuables, in there, either.
If your friend wants to go near the Malaysian border, she should check the advise about if this is safe, or not, at the moment.
thailand overall is very safe. the story changes in the very southern provinces bordering malaysia. you should not have any worries ,using common travel sence, as that area is not along the tourist trail.
Stay away from the south. Phukett, Krabi areas are ok but definatly stay away from Yala area. have just been in Krabi for a week climbing and it's still a great place to go and chill or party.
