starlight2 has indicated that this thread is about Japan

i'm going to japan for the first time in august 2007. i'll be staying 5 weeks. from august 2 - september 6 ... i don't have to pay for room and board because i'm staying with a friend that i met through the exchange program at my high-school two years ago, and now i'm going to visit her back home. :]

i'll be in yokohama, so any info would help. ^^

What do you mean?
I'm interested in everything about Japan, it's people, it's culture, it's food. I'm also interested in it because it's the birthplace of my grandmother .. and it's deffinetly a dream of mine to see all my countries of origin [japan, france, & ireland] & most of east-asia.

As for this trip. Since I will be staying with a friend it's more of what she can do as well. To her Japan is just ... home, so that's why I am trying to get a tourists perspective since if I don't suggest some temples of things of that sort, I am sure we will not be going to any. Her main plans are Kareoke & purikura ... haha. Which I will enjoy immensly as well.

But I'd like some cultural spots. In the Yokohama/Tokyo area. Since that's where I'll be staying. I wanted to go to Kyoto but it's not in the cards for this trip.

You might have to find a way to get to Kyoto even if you go by yourself. You have 5 weeks, and that is too much time just to spend in the Kanto region unless you're doing some kind of research or exchage program within (like I did). If you hang in Tokyo too much, you're sure to be broke in no time

Nantes,

thanks for the info. but i deff. would not want to go to kyoto by myself >.> i'm only an 18 year old american girl who knows no japanese, haha. plsus i heard its like $300 just for transportation from yokohama to kyoto. plus i am there to see my friend thats really the main reason i'm going there, it would be extremely rude to leave her house. when i'm there i'll pretty much be like an exchange student w/o the school portion of course, :P ... what i mean by that is just hanging out w/ my friend and her friends and not really doing touristy things, so i am looking for just some touristy things i will HAVE to do or else regret ^^ and also things that are must sees for just regular fun .. like maybe a suggestion of the best [but cheap] resturaunts/karaoke bars ect ..

That depends, you just need to know where to look... if you want cheap accommodation in Tokyo consider a Manga-Kissa - http://metropolis.co.jp/tokyo/590/feature.asp (Manga-Manboo, Justin Nightingale), a night pack runs at about 1200-1600yen. In Kyoto is 'Kyoto Cheapest Inn' http://www.kyotofashion.com/kyoto-inn/index_eng.html its for backpackers and cheap.

You just need to know how to rough it a little.

That's actually not true. There are tons of cheap resturaunts in Japan as long as you look and don't go to the touristy spots. It's the same anywhere, ... people think NYC is expensive but it's actually not.
