Am trying to decide what to about mobile phones when on my travells.
Intend to get an Oz pre-paid mobile but will an Australian pre-paid mobile work in New Zeland for a while until I have time to buy a New Zealand mobile.

Has anyone used their Australian pre-paid mobile in NZ to call or text the UK. Did it work?

Any advice regarding getting mobiles in Oz and NZ in relation to texts/calls to the UK would be gratefully appreciated.

What about keeping your UK mobile going? Way too expensive I envisage?!

Cheers
Kiz

Hi,
Use a Virgin mobile from the UK. Set it up for 'roaming' and use it anywhere in the world at local rates! Easy!
This is what I did in '02/'03
It's only expensive if you ring the UK!
Ringing locally to book accommodation, for example, is as cheap as it would be with an Aussie phone - no point buying one in each country.
As for phoning UK, the cheapest way is to buy a $10 phonecard and call from a payphone - you get about an hour for that!:)

Hiya,

Im currently planning a trip to OZ, and have done some research into mobile services available. I would agree with stevie, virgin are quite good value.

Also for around $25 (i think !!) you could get a vodafone australia sim card which would work in Oz (not NZ), although you would have to get your mobile unlocked to use the sim card.

Info on Vodafone @ http://www.vodafone.com.au/rep/prepay.jsp?gs=foryou&hd=mobiles&st=promo280803&ss=prepaid

If you take the sim card option (i.e. take you own phone), have a look here....http://www.0044.uk.com/australasia.htm

you can buy the sim card before you live the UK.

Vodafone Australia prepaid SIM will now roam in New Zealand, but you have to call Vodafone Australia Customer Service to have Roaming Activated ,suggest that be done while still in Australia !

A Vodafone NZ prepaid SIM / number is already pre set for Roaming to Australia UK and Spain

some more info see www.prepaidgsm.net

try this...

www.yac.com for £30 a year you can get a nuber starting with 0870... (or something simular)
and from the web you can attach any number (even international) numbers to that number you paid for.
so someone back home only has to remember one number, so if you're in Oz you log on to the website, add your Oz mobile number and presto as soon as somone back home (uk) rings the 0870... number your mobile will ring. if you leave Oz and get a prepay sim in Thailand for example. all you have to do is log on to the net, and change the number on the website.

here's the good bit... you wont be charged for receiving calls from abroad (ie back home) and people back home will only be charged the standard uk rate.

good eh?

hi there,
im in australia now and after looking around, found the cheapest option was to buy a vodafone mobile which you can get for $70 and you get $30 in credit for calls, cost 1 cent per second for locals calls, and its not locked so u can take it to NZ and get a sim card there. plus u can send sms' all over the world for just 25 cents which is the same as it costs locally (so useful u cant even imagine, i am so lovin g that, smsing my friends back home all the time and being in touch in a cheap way in real time). plus there are certain plans u choose, for ex. certain amount of free sms, or free calls after 8 pm, or cheaper calls in the daytime plus all of these also come with reduced rates vodafone to vodafone.
thats what id reccomend!
