Hi there,

Myself and a friend are flying into Sydney to start a years travelling on 6th July. We could only get a flight direct to Sydney but want to start our trip in Cairns so could you please advise me on whether its cheaper to book internal flights in the UK or leave it until we get to Sydney?? any tips would be great.

Thanks, Claire

Hi Claire

It really depends - do you have a set itinerary? Do you know want to spend a few days in Sydney before heading to Cairns? If you do know your dates l would go ahead and book the flights now - its like booking in UK - the closer you leave it to the date you fly the more expensive it will be. We booked our internal flights within Australia & New Zealand months before we went - but we had a set time to visit and set itinerary too! Im a bit anal when it comes to planning!

Try:

QUANTAS
JETSTAR
VIRGIN BLUE

They will give you an idea of costs.

Good luck!

Heather

hey,

if you want to travel around aussie, i would say you can get a bus ride instead. flights maybe fast, but it can be costly. you can get cheap bus rides from all around - FIREFLY provides cheap tickets. besides, you get to enjoy scenic views. so why not?

Yeah we are planning to use busses to travel around the rest of the time but when we first get there we want to start in Cairns rather than Syndey so figured its just easier to get a flight there and start the trip then! We are looking at prices so may well catch a few busses up there after spending a couple of days in Syndey. So many decisions to make .....

Hey internal flights in Auz can be mega cheap if you use Jetstar and Virgin especially if you are not in peak season. You can book them online really easy. You should be able to subscribe to there website for free and they will send you updates on their specials which is very often but you need to get in early. Good luck!

Bear in mind to get THE cheapest domestic flights, you have to book the earliest timeslot (usually they depart at 6AM).
This applies to all 3 airlines. Jetstar and Virgin Blue prices aren't too far apart (Jetstar is cheaper), but look out for little things, like which airport it is landing in.
For example, if you take Jetstar to Melbourne, chances are you might land in an airport called Avalon. Avalon is 2 hours drive from Melbourne itself. Tullamarine airport is about 40mins taxi drive.
Although there are busses that shuttles you from Avalon into Melbourne, you waste 2hours and $24 :). Your pick I guess.

Thanks for all your help guys, we have booked a flight now from Syndey - Cairns, we'll spend a few days in Sydney first and then will stay longer once we've made our way back down. We figured if we book and pay for it before we go then it will be one less thing to come out of our travelling money while we're there. It cost around £150 for both of us so quite cheap! less than 8 weeks to go until our trip - yay!!

hey,

if you want to start in Cairns, yeah, i think the only way to go is to take a flight up to Cairns. by the way, why not change your itneary? because i know lots of ppl who travels the opposite. since you will land in sydney, oh well, might as well travel up to save the cash. but anyways, you booked it, so just enjoy it!

Hi Purdy,

We originally booked our flight to Sydney because it was the cheapest and that is where we were going to start but we have decided to start from Cairns so that we get good weather, as we are arriving in July it won't be very hot in sydney or down south so we figure if we start up in Cairns and make our way down towards the end of the year we will get the best of the weather all year round.

Its all done now so fingers crossed we've done the right thing - either way im sure we'll have a great time. x
