I have the opportunity to live in both cities for the summer, but I don't know which to choose! If anyone has any advice on living in either city, I would love to hear it.

Thank you!!

Beruit - the paris of the middle east! Equally in price. If you want to party party party then Beruit. If you want to save money then Damascus. If you want to meet more people then Damascus, but tell them you are canadian, americans not so popular in Syria! Tell them you are american once you have befriended them and if you trust them (this goes for either city).

Syria is a great country and lots to see once you are there, great train connections to the north, road connetions to jordan, such as petra and amman.

I would say Syria anyday! You can still visit beruit if you needed to! All the lebanon has id Beruit! Syria is much more diverse and cheaper to live/eat etc!

Good luck, both are great places though!

I haven't been to Beirut but i was in Damascus last week and thought it was a great city. The old city is gorgeous and there is also plenty going on in the more modern parts of the city. The rest of syria is fanstastic and there is loads to see. you can get to Beirut quite easily by bus from Damascus its only about 4 hours by service taxi or bus to Amman in Jordan. I met an American guy who was travelling round the middle east and he had no problems at all in Syria when he told people he was American.

My boyfriend has the following to say.
I would choose Damascus, based on what he says. I dont know much, about either.

Beirut was once called the Paris of the middle-east. Decades of war haven't done the city much good of course. Israel and anti-Israelian groups have devastated the place. There's always a chance of violence flaring up. I wouldn't consider it 'safe'.
Damascus is the capital of Syria, a country that actively supports terrorists that target Israel. It's safe, I suppose.

As several countries still have travel warnings for Lebanon and not all airlines have yet resumed service to Beirut, you are better off with Damascus.

Ideally you should be able to do a combined trip. Turkish Airlines offers forking flights, flying into DAM and out of Beirut.

Thank you so much to everyone who responded! I found an internship in Beirut, so I'll be living there for three months. Again, if anyone has any advice about living there, it would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Anne
