Hi all,
I have never travelled in Asia before and I'm wondering if it's safer to leave my passport in the hostel safe or carry it on me at all times? Can anyone let me know what they did? I'll be in China and Vietnam mainly.
Txs, Suz

Hi there;

I think it depends on how safe do you feel in your hostel.
What I most of the times do is wear my passports and so on very tight on my body.
And still with that in mind you have to beware of pickpockets...they are more tricked then we are...

Don't know if you can use this short info, it is a bit about my feeling.

Anyway ; happy travels.

My advice is to carry it with you at all times. In Vietnam half the time it will be with the hotel owners because they need to check you in (or at least they did last time i was there). But if you have it in your possession, carry it in a money belt under your clothes where no one can get at it and you always know where it is. I prefer a neck wallet that hangs down under my cloths. The only execption is when you are on a beach - don't leave it on the beach when you go to swim. So you can either buy a waterproof pouch, or take the risk and trust your hotel with your passport.

i agree with degolasse.. its best to carry it close to ur body, where pickpockets cant reach. never leave it in ur bag, or even let it out of ur sight. there are actually syndicates that go around stealing n selling passports. european and american passports are generally very valuable, so i'd suggest u think twice abt leaving ur passport with any stranger, even if it's the hostel staff... unless u're staying in a 4 or 5-star hotel.

Thanks all, that's what I thought but someone had said it was normal practice to leave at reception. Will stay with my own gut feeling so :). Thanks again.

Hello Suz

I usually carry mine, in a moneybelt.
Dont leave it, in the hostel or guesthouse room.
If u feel u can trust the hostel or guesthouse owner, u can leave it, with them.

Some countries that I have been to "hold" your passport at the front desk, Vietnam is one that comes to mind right now.

When checking into hotels, some other countries just check the passport for proper visa and to verify your name. Often you will need your passport with you if you intend to cash a travelers check.

Always have a couple photo copies made of the information pages of your passport or scan it into a computer and save it in an email to your self. The photo copies might help you get a new passport from your embassy if you need a replacement.

In the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand and other countries, my choice is to leave the passport in my safety box. I do carry a photo copy with me but in around 10 years of Asia travel I have never been asked by any official to produce my passport. The only time I take the passport out of my safety box is to cash a TC or go home.

If you intend to keep your passport with you make sure you have it sealed in a plastic envelope because ordinary body sweat or rain will make some visa stamp ink run.
