I am not sure about competitive fares or if any even actually exist between London and Vietnam. I'm pretty certain that no airline has a bargain flight going from London-Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City as Ho Chi Minh city is a minor hub in terms of the airline passenger numbers in Asia and long haul flights generally only leave out of the most widely used by international travellers. I think that any flight you get from London-Saigon will either go via Bangkok or Hong Kong.

I'm trying to find out if I can book a flight from Hong Kong to HCM City for cheap so I could fly Oasis from London to Hong Kong.

Thanks for the tips regarding RyanAir and the London-Brussels-Cairo route.

Just an update...

I've paid for most of my reservations. This is not a one-package RTW ticket but a series of O/W tickets...

....DATE...FROM................TO...............PRICE...(status)......AIRLINE
1) 04/23: Los Angeles >> London..........$204.....(paid).....British Airways
2) 07/23: Frankfurt.....>> Bangkok........$589.....(paid).....Qatar Airways
3) 09/03: Saigon........>> Sydney..........$373.....(wait).....Jetstar, etc...
4) 10/01: Melbourne...>> Christchurch...$159.....(paid).....Air NZ
5) 10/15: Auckland.....>> Los Angeles....$459.....(paid).....Air NZ
6) Service Fee for #2-5. . . . . . . . . . . . .$15
7) TOTAL. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $1799 (incl $373 Saigon > Sydney)

I'm waiting out the Saigon > Sydney leg. Jetstar offers the best price but their rules are very restrictive. No refund for cancellation! I'll book it later as my travel approaches SE Asia.

What do you think - is the price decent?

I reckon aharrold45 is right the best way is to buy lots of individual one way tickets rather than an all in RTW ticket deal, which is what my friends and I were going to buy. We were running into problems because we wanted to be traveling for over a year and most tickets have a 12 month time limit. we were looking at paying £1100-1200 for all flights including taxes and not that many stops with little flexibility, but after having spent a few evenings on the net I managed to get a trip as follows with complete flexibility for just under £1000 I would imagine a similar trip using a round the world ticket would be at least £1500.

By getting one way tickets we get to go where we want, when we want for much less money, and its was quite good fun finding the flights and researching the places we're going to stay.

London - Hong Kong
Hong Kong - Singapore
Singapore - Bangkok
Bangkok - Malaysia
Malaysia - Bali
Bali - Sydney
Sydney - Auckland
Auckland - Fiji
Fiji - LA
New York - London

A good Link to try is this one that gives lots of very cheaps flights around Asia

That sounds like a good price for your trip. Just be careful if you travel during high season as prices jump dramatically. I'm leaving in 3 weeks so flexibility isn't so flexible.

For one-way Germany to Bangkok, check out Mahan Air. They are an Iranian Airline and they fly from Duesseldorf to Bangkok via Tehran for 388 EUR (summer high season price; at current exchange rate 525 USD).

http://www.mahan-air.de/

Note though that they have a bad reputation and are a far cry from Emirates.

On the upside, you could try to get an Iranian visa (ha ha) and request a stopover in Iran.

Thanks for your help but if you followed the thread to the 2nd page, you'll see that the FRA > BKK segment is $589 with Qatar. That's $64 higher than Mahan, which says nothing about date changes & cancellation fees on their website. Qatar charges $25 for date change / $100 for cancellation. Plus, I'm not sure how I feel about stopping in Iran with a US passport. I could be framed by either the Iranian government for spying or US Homeland Security for aiding the enemy!!! Ha! Ha!
