88 in Chinese means Bye Bye.

Cos the number 8 in Chinese is read as Ba. So 88 would read as Ba-Ba. (try not to sound the B so much. it's more like P but stronger, yet less strong than a B)

hope this clears everything up! :)

8 is Mandarin Chinese rhymes also with prosperity - "ba" and "fa" so it could be an auspicious number as well when used in context

itinerant: u r right, 8 has an auspicious connotation, but er, that's not what it is here lah!

i'm damned sure 88 means bye bye because i talk to chinese and taiwanese friends on MSN everyday and that is how they speak. that is their slang. so i can CONFIRM CONFIRM CONFIRM, its guaranteed with a stamp, that 88 means bye bye.

END. OF. DISCUSSION.

haha.

88 is the number of days it takes mercury to orbit the sun, which gave it its name, meaning speed or travel

hope this helps
