I have the time this summer to finally get my Padi DM cert. Since the Philippines has rain and typhoons during June, I have to go elsewhere. I have my sights set on Malaysia, but I'm looking for some recommendations for quality dive shops/locations (at a good price) and any info that might be shared on the subject.

i did my padi with Coral; Sky divers on Pulau Perhentian Kecil - i would recommend it to everyone. They instructors are FANTASTIC (esp Yves & Rory) and the location is unbeatable - could have stayed there forever but only had two weeks.

What is the PADI diving certificate? Can you go diving without one?

PADI is one of the international agencies that certifies recreational divers. There are other agencies (like NAUI) that also certify divers. Someone who was not certified could do "discover scuba diving" dives with an instructor.

Any other Malaysian diving thoughts/recommendations out there?
