How easy is it to find work in South America. How much can you earn? enough to save or just enough to survive?

If we want to teach English is it essential to have TEFL?

It's virtually impossible to do so legally. Illegally, it's possible to find odd jobs as a teacher, but you can safely forget about it without proper qualifications. Better save up before you go.

Some hostels offer work for food and a room. But you should always have enough money to cover the whole trip incase you don't find anything. Would just make the things stressful, and not enjoyable at all.
As bentivogli said better save up before you go.... and if you do manage to find work, it just gives you more money for the next trip!
