I stayed at Sydney Central YHA a few years ago and it was a great place.

Friendly, clean, good facilities (kitchen, lockers, internet cafe, swimming pool, etc) located in the CBD right by the train station and bus terminal.

I was checking out sydney hostels a few weeks ago and it is at least $6 more expensive to stay there than in king's cross (Australia's most famous red light district...) or somewhere less central. But to me, it's worth it cause you're in the middle of the action and you won't get lost!

Stay at Central if you're planning on exploring the opera house, markets, and inner-city, and are willing to take the short (bus/train?) trip to the beach. If your whole reason for visiting is the beach, go for a place located right on the beach (but further from the CBD).

search for a hostel: yellowpages.com.au
see where it's located:whereis.com (state = New South Wales)

Hope that helps
Maya

hey there

i stayed in 2 hostels in sydney, one was billabong in newtown, which is about a mile or so from the city centre. While the other was wake up! which is in the centre of the city. I found wake up to the better hostel, even though it was about $1 or 2 more than some other hostels but it was the best hostel that i stayed in (& i had travelled for about 7 months!) Hope this is of help to you!
