Anyone know of any non-commercial coffee shops near the station?

After we've checked in we just want a nice smoke and a beer....

Also

one of my mates is 17....how likely are places to I.D?

a non commercial coffeeshop? Just trying to imagine what that should look like ... if you are talking about buying it on the streets, then yes it is possible, but you can't be sure about the quality (as where in Coffeeshops you can, and they can also give you advise, on how to use it, and which stuff is good for you)

I am not sure how likely it is to being ask for an ID, that would also depends on how old he looks. But you could always try it the 'sneaky way', one person who is 18, will buy some extra ... and you all chill somewhere else.

Your mate should be fine. A lot of the coffee shops are really laid back and probably won't care. If so, like the other guy said you can just buy it for him and chill elsewhere. But seriously, I don't think anyone cares :)

Guess again, Nantes. Age checks have always been strict, and recently they became even stricter; trying to get your weeds under 18 is pointless, as no coffee shop owner would risk his license for a tourist wanting to get high. Getting it and then passing it on to a minor is a criminal offence, one that is actually prosecuted vigorously, so I wouldn't risk that. Just a thought.

No coffee shop will sell to under 18s as they will lose their licence straight away so they will not risk this, they are VERY strict. Not sure what yiou mean by non-commercial, but if you mean not the bulldog or grasshopper, then I suggest you walk down woermostraat in the RLD as there are loads of coffee shops there.

This is why I should not make basic assumptions

Your buddy has a very high chance of getting ID'd. I did and I don't look anywhere near 18. He definitely shouldn't risk buying any at the shops.
As for the "less-commercial shops," well they're deeper into the city. Most near the train station and near Leidseplein are quite commercial. But some commercial shops have a good atmosphere about them. I personally enjoy Grasshopper 2 although it's pretty commercial. It's seems like it's always poppin'. From my experience I'd recommend:
Grasshopper 2 naturally, directly in front of the station. Easy to find, best place to meet.
Barney's - west of the central station with good smoke and food. perfect combo, although food's overpriced.
Abraxas - immediately south of Dam square. 3 stories and some large couch areas.
Dampkring - Near Spui. Fantastic place and smoke if you can get a seat.
Everyone's experience is different though, so feel free to map your own route and have a blast!
