what shots should a westerner get before travelling to south east asia?? how awsome is the golden triangle???

It really depends on the individual.

Tetanus is a must anywhere.

Hep A is a consideration anywhere.
Because of the proper use of Asian toilets, it might spread more easily there.

If you are planning to power down lots of local fish and seafood, Thyphoid and Cholera might be considered.

Is your Polio series completed?

If you plan to get down and personal with the local talent, Hep B is popular.
Also, in case you wind up needing surgery, it's nice to be covered.
In my case, I already picked up an immunity somewhere along the line.

You can get all or none, but these are the ones I would consider.

I'd echo all that, although I was told that cholera is more a matter of hygiene and easily avoided as long as you don't live in infected areas and keep/eat clean.
Some malaria precautions might be worthwhile if you're going to hotter parts.

Here are the ones I get

Hepatitis A
Malaria prevention, depending on where I intend to go
Polio booster
There are more u can get, but I consider them optional. ;)
