I personally think San Francisco is so much better than Chicago. What's better than fireworks over the Golden Gate Bridge? Plus it's a beautiful city all over. Sure there are nice parts in Chicago but there's a lot of not so nice parts. Too many for me at least.

Never been to SF for the 4th, but I have been to Chicago's celebrations.

Chicago has a week-long festival leading up to Independence Day, known as The Taste of Chicago, right in Grant Park on the shore of Lake Michigan and right next to downtown. Hundreds of food vendors sell their wares, there are concerts every day/night. The main fireworks display generally takes place on the 3rd, and consists of four barges in Monroe Harbor - the fireworks are timed with the music from a live concert in the park. Quite awesome!!

Great display, but remember you will be among several hundred thousand people jammed into Grant Park and surrounding areas, so it's best if you're not claustrophobic. And you will get the chance to see Chicago Police officers riding Segways...a sight in itself!!!

If weather is a factor, San Francisco will be dramatically cooler than a hot, humid Chicagoland area.

ive never been to chicago, but live in sf... i would recommend chicago... as mark twain said he experienced his coldest winter in summer -- san francisco...

it will likely be foggy and remind you of new years... no shorts or tees or bbq's... not sure where your from but of your expecting a traditional 4th of july SF is not the place

I haven't been to Chicago before but I have been to San Fran, and I couldnt imagine a better city to be in on Independance Day! It's a fantastic lively bustling place on an average day. Think of the bay lit up with fireworks and what that' going to be like!!
