Hi all, I'm heading to Oz in Sep/Oct time and going to go via Japan to see some sights - just wondering if anyone can advise me on a good length of time to go for, I'm thinking maybe a month? Hopefully would tour about quite a bit.
Any help appreciated, thanks.
I went for 2 weeks and managed to see quite a bit but would have loved to have had more time. Bear in mind that japan is very expensive so a month would cost quite a bit. it's essential to get a japan rail pass before you enter the country - http://www.japanrailpass.net/ . it will definitely save you money if you plan to travel around japan as individual journeys on the Shinkansen are very expensive and the pass also enables you to use the internal train network in tokyo (not the underground).
in 2 weeks i managed to see:
and a couple of day trips from Fukouka (I was staying with a friend there).
send me a pm if you need more info
We spent just over 2 weeks in Japan in October 2006 (excellent time of the year) and we travelled extensively using the rail pass (we also paid for a Nozomi ticket ).
Takayama - very traditional and stayed in a luxurious ryokan - AMAZING!
Mount Koya - at a temple with monks
A month will be expensive but it depends what your budget is and where you stay. If you want more info send me a PM.
It'll be expensive for a month, perhaps a few weeks? I agree with the others in this topic. They are all great places to visit but if you stay longer than two weeks you should definitely get up north. It's a different situation there. I haven't been to Sapporo yet but you should check it out (If you have time)
