Hi,

Myself and a friend are heading to Aus in July and going straight upto Cairns and will then work our way down to Sydney/Melbourne over a year. We are planning to stay in Cairns for a couple of months, hopefully get some work and save some more money for the rest of our trip....is Cairns a good place to stay in for work and to start our trip? From what i've seen so far it looks like a great place that has loads going on in and around but not so sure about work?

Any advice on Cairns would be great!

Thanks, Claire

Cairns is one of my favorite places in OZ, heaps to do, and see. Workwise, there is a lot of hospitality/tourism stuff.
Jobsearch.gov.au will give u an idea of how much is available.

The only problem is that there are a lot of people like you with the same plan and there are certain businesses that take advantage of you. Hostels for instance and the fruit picking industry.

Steer clear of Bundaberg.

I have done this and saw many people (backpackers) who had run out of money who basically only got enough money to cover their hostel accommodation so were stuck. They were lured there by hostels advertising garaunteed work which is often not the case.

Make sure you come here with enough money to move on quickly if you have to and always keep enough money to get back to where you come from.

hey there
Im in Cairns at the mo. I loved it here when i got into Oz so decided to come back here to work. i am finding it impossible to get a job. maybe its the time of year but i get the general feeling that the restaurants and coffee shops dont want to employ backpackers....
