What if you need to use the toilet in a long bus journey...

Travel Forums Asia What if you need to use the toilet in a long bus journey...

Hi guys,

I was reading in another site about people's experiences with toilets around the world. And theses days I was wondering what people normally do if they need to use a toilet in long journeys, such Kathmandu-Lhasa (will be doing it in June)... Do buses stop quite often? What if you've got a diarrhoea? I suppose there's no toilet facilities in such buses, right? Can you ask the driver to stop? Can you guys tell me about your experiences when you feel mother nature is calling you but you're stuck for long hours in a bus?
Thanks! :)

bus stops atleast every 3 to 4 hours in Asia. never make a bustrip if you are feeling sick (it will be a bad memory)...

fortunately i've never been in that situation - if you have diarrhoea and you really have to go on a long journey take some immodium beforehand. i've never done the journey that you mentioned but i have done many others in asia; sometimes there are toilets on the buses but mostly not. i guess if you really needed to go the driver would probably stop for you! In some places you just have to grin and bear it, such as Cambodia where you shouldn't really go wandering off the beaten track.....

hey... can tell you about india...the buses usually stop every 2-3 hours if its a really long journey...even in a short journey of 3 hours it stops once...so i guess thats ok... but if u have diarrhoea..as bex said u better have some medication to stop it.....
well...when u gotta go...u gotta go...so ask the bus guy to stop at the nearest toilet immediately
cheers!

Erm, don't travel when you are sick for a start!!! If it is an emergency, take some immodium or something equally as strong. Buses don't generally have toilets in the parts of Asia I've been to but they do stop every 3 hours or so.... If they don't, the driver will usually oblige if you ask him to pull over I've been told, but you might have to grin and bear 'going native' (yes, I've done it...). TIP: wear a long skirt....(didn't check whether you're a girl...I guess so, not such a big deal for guys - unless they get a serious calling if you catch my drift...). Oh, and don't eat anything suspect the day leading up to a big trip...

Hello Leo

I usually avoid drinking too much(water and coffee, I mean), before a long bus journey. They sometimes have toilets, but not always.
If u have diarrhoea, wait until it is gone, before taking a bus journey. Or else u could take the train. They usually have toilets.

Always take advantage of any fairly clean toilet when traveling in Asia any time you can! Some buses do have a toilet on the bus - not enough though and most likely not on cheap buses!

Use DEPENDS, holds about one half gallon or run behind a tree and ignore the kids laughing at you! And always have your own TP and some handi-wipes with you!

Probably a good idea to not drink a lot of beer just before a long trip (yeah sure!) Not getting the "trots" is best, spend more money for your food by eating in cleaner places that have running water so the cooks can wash their hands after using the toilet!

never drink too much water, just a litter to dampen ur mouth.

some bus drivers, although they oblige to, dont really pull the bus over when u are in need.

i had this bad experience whereby the bus driver refused to pull the bus over when i was in emergency, he just asked me to wait..

since he was the 1 eho steer the wheel, i have no choice but to suffer myself for 1 hour before the bus stopped.

don ever trap urself into this situation, u might get bus phobia...

Oh god, I've had some not so pleasant memories!

First week in Peru, I had a bit of a "dose" (let's just call it that ) I had a 10hr bus journey on a bus with no loo. Thank God for the man who invented Immodium, that's all I can say!

In Bolivia I ended up in a similar situation on a mammoth bus journey. The bus stopped once during the whole trip, and when our busload of pent-up travellers disgorged itself onto the streets, we couldnt find a toilet anywhere! NOT ONE! Myself and another girl begged the locals, offered them money but apparently there just weren't any loos there.

Not a very pleasant trip, that one!

I suppose any bus driver who is half a human being will stop and let you off to pee. Whether they wait around for you is another thing though!
