There's a connecting InterCity/Newmans coach at Greymouth, leaving 45 minutes after the TranzAlpine arrives. This'll take you as far as Franz Josef and/or Fox Glacier that day, and then the next day (or the day after that, as the glaciers are well worth staying around at for a day), the next bus takes you on to Queenstown (leaving early in the morning from Franz Josef and passing through Fox 45 minutes later, to arrive in Queenstown at the end of the afternoon).
You can download a full timetable here (Note, at the moment they only seem to have the 2006 edition up. I don't expect the 2007 edition to differ a whole lot, but do confirm actual times beforehand.)

Yeah, there aren't too many options between Greymouth and Queenstown other than the bus. And Greymouth is miserable, so get out of there as quickly as possible. Just not much to do or see there. When I went, I rented a car and drove which I would highly recommend because the drive is quite beautiful. It isn't really that cheap to rent a car, but I took about 200 pictures on the drive.

Also, Franz Josef is a cute town and the glaciers are very cool, so stopping in between is a great idea. I stayed at the Glow Worm Cottage, which was comfortable and inexpensive.
