Hi everyone, from november this year myself and a friend will be travelling australia for 12mths. Initially we planned to use buses and stay in hostels etc but more recently have decided to buy a campervan to give us more independence and control over where we travel. Problem is we thought this may save us money i.e on hostel prices but after looking through the lonely planet it seems that pitch prices on campsites are $16-24. Has anyone any advice on whether this is the true cost of overnight stays in a campervan or can you stop anywhere overnight in oz without needing to use campsites?

Hi Michelle,
That sounds about right for a campsite and a camper will give you a lot more flexibility in being able to stop when you feel like, rather than having to look for accommodation.
I'm no expert on free camping in Oz, but I have a strong feeling that it exists (whether officially or not) so keep asking and I'm sure you'll get lots of help.

Hiya, Me and my friend bought a campervan and travelled all the way around OZ for 6 months.

Most of the campsites we stayed in were cheaper than that. It is more expensive to stay in a powered site, but just a normal non powered site is generally half the price you have quoted.
The campsites are amazing, you have showers, a kitchen and a tele room and things like that.

What we did most of the time (which is quite naughty but saved us a lot of money) is we would sleep outside the campsite (on the side of a road anywhere) and just walk onto the campsite in the morning and go and use their facilities. Have a shower, cook some breakfast, go back to our van and be on our way.

In some places along the east coast there were some signs saying it was illegal to camp there (like in a car park for example) but as long as you dont do it where the signs are then ull be okay. Residential streets were a good place but we slept in some random places to be fair.

Dont let the campsite price put you off, you dont have to pay anything if you dont wat to, and its not that expensive anyway. And travelling OZ in a campervan is the most amazing thig ever, you see things that busses miss out on, you got all the freedom in the world, go for it!!!!!

We travelled oz for a few months and found that the best way was by campervan.
If there is 2 or 3 of you, this is definatley the cheapest and most comfortable option.
The east coast of oz is really nice.
Campervans are really easy and lets you explore off the beaten tourist track, small towns like Jervis Bay on the NSW south coast.

we also stopped at some uncrowded beaches and most definatley saw things that most backpackers on tours would never see.

Have a great trip
south coast of nsw was really beautiful, dont miss it.
